Hundreds march against sexual violence in New Delhi’s ‘SlutWalk’
“Some women carried placards that read “Enough,” “My Dress is Not a Yes” and “Who’s Shameless? Your eyes and your thoughts.” Others walked hand-in-hand with boyfriends or brothers. A few carried infants and toddlers through the streets in the scorching summer heat. India staged its first SlutWalk on Sunday morning, a demonstration organized here by a university student that attracted hundreds of spectators, a flurry of media, and more than a few curiosity-seekers. The event came on the heels of Toronto’s SlutWalk, which was staged in April after a Toronto police officer said women who don’t want to be raped should “avoid dressing like sluts.” Since the incendiary comment, similar walks have been staged in cities from Sydney, Australia, to Sao Paolo, Brazil. New Delhi’s was the first to be held in Asia and highlights women’s rights in a country of 1.2 billion that is set to become be the world’s largest.”
